In Memoriam: Professor Mathias M. Müller

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Professor Mathias M. Müller on 12th August 2026.

Professor Müller served as Chair of the JCTLM from 2010 to 2014, held the position of long-standing Chair of the IFCC Scientific Division, and served with distinction as President of the IFCC, where his vision and leadership left a lasting impression on the organization.

The JCTLM honours him as one of its founding members in 2002. He was among the first to recognize that the newly enacted European legislation governing In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices would, owing to the global nature of the IVD market, exert an immediate and far-reaching international impact. He further understood that the field urgently required international consensus and agreement on the implementation of metrological traceability. It was this understanding that gave rise to the founding of the JCTLM in 2002, an achievement that stands as a milestone in the history of metrological traceability in laboratory medicine.

Professor Müller's dedication, leadership, and extraordinary contributions to the field of laboratory medicine will be remembered with the utmost respect and gratitude. His unwavering commitment to scientific excellence, education, and international collaboration has left an enduring legacy that will continue to shape the discipline for years to come.

The JCTLM community mourns the loss of his wise and invaluable counsel, and extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues
